Union Pacific (UP) announced the construction of a block swap yard at their Santa Teresa Intermodal Terminal & Refueling Station, triggering an additional investment in the state of New Mexico upwards of $20 million
The new block swap yard will be constructed within the existing Santa Teresa footprint, allowing UP to aggregate container “blocks” to add to trains passing through Santa Teresa daily. By adding a block swap yard in New Mexico, containers from UP’s inland ramps destined to Southern California will launch more frequently to the block swap yard, where they will be promptly consolidated to a train to continue moving toward their specific destination. This change will reduce dwell time and congestion, ultimately reducing transit time overall.
