Earlier today, MVEDA joined Stampede Meat CEO Brock Furlong, Governor Susana Martinez, the Economic Development Department, the New Mexico Partnership and officials from the City of Sunland Park, New Mexico, in welcoming Stampede Meat, Inc. to the NM Borderplex region. Stampede Meat, a leading processor of proteins to national restaurants and retailers across the country, announced that they have purchased the former Tyson Foods plant in Sunland Park, will invest more than $36 million in infrastructure and will hire up to 1,295 employees over the next five years. Davin Lopez, President/CEO of the Mesilla Valley Economic Development Alliance (MVEDA) commented that “The positive economic impact that that will be created by this project for the City of Sunland Park cannot be overstated. With over 1,200 employees, Stampede Meat will be one of the top two or three manufacturers in all of New Mexico.”
“We are very pleased to invest in Sunland Park and are grateful to the Governor as well as the state, county and local officials who have helped us,” said Furlong. “We look forward to expanding our workforce to continue to provide quality products for our customers.”
Stampede Meat, Inc. was founded in 1995 and is headquartered in Bridgeview, Illinois.

In 2015, Tyson vacated the facility on McNutt Rd. which resulted in 200 lost jobs to the community. At the time, MVEDA, together with the NM Partnership, began aggressively re-marketing the facility to food processors and site selection consultants nationwide. These efforts eventually led to introductions with Stampede Meat executives, direct site visits, and comparative operational analysis provided by MVEDA, which outlined the benefits of operating in Sunland Park versus the other sites that were under consideration in Oklahoma, Texas, and Iowa. “It was through this process that Stampede Meat realized the high-value operational benefit operating in Sunland Park would bring to the company’s expansion plans over the other locations,” reported Eric Montgomery, Vice President Business Development for MVEDA.
To secure the project, the Governor’s office, the economic development department, and the City of Sunland Park collectively outlined an economic development package consisting of LEDA, JTIP & IRBs which added to the value of the New Mexico proposal. Added Mr. Lopez, “We cannot thank the Governor’s office enough for all the support they have provided on this project. Through collaborative efforts between the State of New Mexico, The City of Sunland Park, and MVEDA, we were able to illustrate to Stampede Meat that they were partnering with a community that was truly committed to their growth and success.”
