The Mesilla Valley has a long history in transportation, dating from its location along the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro from Mexico City to Santa Fe, established in 1598. Today, Las Cruces is located at the junction of Interstate-10 and Interstate-25, major highway transportation routes to both coasts, the mid-west, Mexico and Canada. Rail service is provided by both the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe and the Union Pacific railroads. The Union Pacific is developing a major facility at Santa Teresa which, when completed, will be capable of handling 100,000 containers per year. Las Cruces is less than an hour drive to El Paso International Airport, served by 9 national carriers with non-stop flights to 15 cities.
