The U.S. Census Bureau undertakes an annual census every ten years. As information has been easier to obtain this century, the Census Bureau is moving to a new system named the American Community Survey (ACS) which is updated more frequently. Data for larger communities such as Las Cruces is updated on an annual basis (1-year estimates) while smaller communities are not. You’ll find population counts throughout this site which contain 1-year estimates (most accurate) and 5-year estimates (least accurate). The data included on each of the community pages is based on 5-year estimates for consistency since none of the outlying communities’ data is available as 1-year estimates. The demographics pages below represent 2011 averages based on 2011 ACS 1-year estimates. The 2012 and 2017 projections included in the Esri Data reports are their forecasts.
The tables on the following pages listed below are available in a concise, one-page printable format on the Popular Downloads page:
- Demographics Estimates (population, age distribution, racial makeup)
- Social Characteristics (household size, families, citizenship)
- Economic & Housing Characteristics (incomes, housing units)
